Have you ever heard of Peppercorn Day? A holiday in Bermuda, Peppercorn Day may be the oddest holiday in the Caribbean. Its history dates to 1797 when a group of Freemasons began renting the Old State House in St. George, for the sum of one peppercorn. In 1816, the holiday tradition began. Every year on the Wednesday closest to April 23, amidst pomp and circumstance, a horse-drawn carriage brings the governor to collect the peppercorn.

While Peppercorn Day is exclusive to Bermuda, many Caribbean islands share similar holidays. Perhaps the largest number of holidays in the Caribbean are of religious origin. Days venerating patron saints can be found throughout the islands, but nowhere to the extent of Puerto Rico. Even Puerto Rico's cities have their own patron saints with attendant holidays. However, the most important is St. John's Day, celebrating the island's patron saint and namesake of its capital city, San Juan. Beach parties end with people walking backward into the ocean and falling into the water to honor the tradition of baptism by St. John.

Christmas in the Caribbean may be more enthusiastic than anywhere else in the world. The twelve days of Christmas are still celebrated on many islands, culminating in Epiphany on January 6. On Guadeloupe, Epiphany marks the beginning of Carnival season, which continues until Lent. The carnival reaches its peak on Shrove Tuesday, when businesses close for five days so all can participate in the parades.

Islands also celebrate their heritage with national holidays, though the specifics differ from place to place. In Dominica, late October ushers in Creole Week. Part of Creole Week is Heritage Day, held in a different village every year and paying homage to that village's unique aspects and important citizens. Island-wide, the biggest celebration of the week is Creole Day. Everyone dresses up in traditional Creole fashion and enjoys Creole style parades, music, and food.

Similarly, Jamaica's Maroon Day (January 6) pays tribute to the Maroons, freed slaves who fled to the South coast of Jamaica to start their lives anew. Their ancestors still live there and host the biggest celebration of the holiday, the Accompong Maroon Festival. Drawing visitors from all over the globe, this huge affair had an attendance of 16,000 people in 2005. The feast includes traditional dancing, singing, and ceremonies.

Then there's Indian Arrival Day (May 30) in Trinidad and Tobago. Although it was only made official in the 1990s, the island's sizable Indian population has celebrated the holiday for many years. It commemorates the arrival of indentured servants from India.

Many Caribbean countries celebrate their independence from conquering nations, such as Spain, the Netherlands, or France. Holidays honoring national heroes who fought for independence are common, like Errol Barrow Day in Barbados. But the islands also retain holidays from the conquerors, like Bastille Day, Queen's Day, and the Prince of Wales' Birthday. Emancipation and slavery abolition holidays are also national holidays on many islands.

Even the weather has a place on the holiday calendar. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, the fourth Monday in July is Hurricane Supplication Day. Marking the beginning of their hurricane season, it's a low-key day for people to go to church to pray that hurricanes pass them by, or at least spare lives and buildings. A Tobago Vacation Guide

Tobago is often known only as the little sister of Trinidad, as in Trinidad and Tobago, and this doesn’t in any way do it justice. A Tobago vacation is a vacation on a unique Caribbean Island, still relatively unspoilt by mass tourism.

It lies some 20 miles to the north east of Venezuela and around 150 miles south of Barbados.

The sun shines year round with an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, falling to seventy three degrees at night, with the rainy season from June until November. Persistent rain happens only rarely, what it normally means is brief bursts of heavy rain followed by sunshine. The dry season is December to April which unsurprisingly is also high season and correspondingly higher prices.

You might need some good reasons to persuade you to take a Tobago vacation, and one very good reason especially if your vacation has to be taken during the summer months is the fact that Tobago is south of the hurricane belt.

Another outstanding feature of Tobago, and this isn’t something you will see often if at all on your Caribbean Island Travels, and that is empty beaches and no skyscraper tower block style hotels in sight.

Vietnam Travel: A glimpse of Quy Nhon

Away from the noise and bustle of Highway One, away from the crush of development, Quy Nhon offers the peace and tranquility of bygone times. As I walk down a side street I hear a song emanate from a radio and its lyrics engrave the essence of Quy Nhon in my memory:"...Today the streets are encased in sunlight, I am alone on an empty street. Far away, waves sing softly the song of my longing for you...".

I've been drawn to Quy Nhon for a long time. In my imagination, this is the place of the ruined Do ban citadel from which the rulers of Chiem Thanh city ruled unchallenged for so many years. In my mind I can hear horses neighing and solider shouting as they fight the deadly battles between Cham soldiers and those of the Vietnamese dynasties that imposed their might from the north. Later, once the area came under Vietnamese control, it gave birth to powerful military heroes (Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Hue and Nguyen Lu all hailed from this region).

There were artists too. Van Cao, a famous poet, painter and composer, came from here and wrote about the Cham towers that "take cover under the blue sky". His poetry inspired me to visit some of the towers, which draw thousands of tourists every year.

The twin granite towers in Thap Doi, just outside Quy Nhon, are as red as lipstick. They're relatively small and are humbled by the powerful sunlight that beats down on them, but they are unique from other towers in one way: their creators were heavily influenced by Hindu architecture and each tower is carved with Garudas, mythical birds still revered in Indonesia. North of the towers are two bridges where lovers have traditionally opened their hearts to each other with poems like this:

Two towers stand together,
two bridges stand together,
So why can't I get close to you?

Like the Egyptian pyramids, no one knows how the Cham were able to build these towers. Each brick was compacted tightly next to its neighbor before another was added above, yet none were tied with mortar. Without this glue, how did these monuments withstand the test of time and survive hundreds of years of rain and heat? The secret of their resilience increases their appeal.

Out of the city and along Highway One, four more beautiful towers come into view. These are the Banh It towers, named after a type of rice cake whose shape they resemble. The main tower is to the East because the Cham believed that an island in South China Sea (known in Vietnam as the Eastern Sea) was home to their gods. From the top of a nearby hill you can see each tower clearly. They are like four sunbeams falling from the sky, each one mighty in its lonely solitude.

Not far away are the Duong Long towers, a group of three exquisite buildings. They stand close to each other, with the tallest reaching 36 meters (120 feet) into the sky and the others an impressive 29 meters (95 feet). Some say they are the most beautiful of all remaining Cham towers, made so by the plethora of engravings that depicts gods, dancing girls, elephants, dragons and nagas (mythical snakes).

Quy Nhon is the capital of Binh Dinh province; know for its martial arts prowess. But from here too have come poets. One of its best known was Han Mac Tu, who died of leprosy in the early 20th century. I visited Quy Hoa hospital where he ended his days in peaceful repose, creating his life's last masterpieces. One night, as he gazed at the shimmering moon, he wrote this tribute to love:

Far away, a girl sits by the Nhan River washing silk dresses.
Water becomes the moon and the moon becomes water.
The silk is dampened by the watery moon.
The girl is wrapped in moonlight,
Only her cheekbones shine red.
I want to hold the moon in my arms,
I dream of the moon and pick at the moonlight.

When Han Mac Tu died, his remains stayed in Quy Nhon and his grave became a place of pilgrimage for many people. I visited it at nightfall, as the fading sunlight fell behind a mountain and splashed its dying golden rays over the sea around Quy Nhon. It was to the sound of waves crashing on these beaches that Tu was lulled into his unbreakable sleep. Behind his grave a painter, Dzu Kha, engraves Tu's poems on wooden palates for visiting tourists.

I had only a glimpse of Quy Nhon but I won't forget its pull; the ancient moss-covered towers, the gentle sounds of Tu's resting place in Gheng Rang, and the quiet rhythm of the sea.

An excursion by road to Dalat

We were driving around probably not too sure where to go. We must have been heading to Saigon when I saw this sign post on the right saying Dalat. I had heard the name. It was an old French hill station far to the north of Saigon.

It had the good reputation of an agreable place to go. It brought to mind tales of one of the old British hill stations of the RAJ. Simla? Anyway my curiosity was roused and I asked PB if she had been there and she said no. I turned right and off we went.

We were able to come to these decisions without any discussion which was good. On the other hand we didn't know how far it was. It certainly wasn't near. We didn't know what the road was like. I am not giving distances. I would have to check them on a map. I had no map then. Anyway even with a map I would not have been much better off.

A detailed military map was the last thing one wanted to be caught with and anything else was worse than useless. The conditions on some of the roads were appalling and it was not unknown to travel mile after mile on second gear. Traffic jams in Saigon were monstrous and in the country side a blown bridge could cause a bottle neck with traffic three lanes deep on either side and no way for any vehicle to get through to clear the bridge. Or for that matter just a blown bridge and not a soul about.

To compare a journey then with whatever distance is marked on a map today has no bearing on the reality of the situation as it was then .

What perhaps was surprising was the fact that the Vietnamese continued to travel the roads. Their driving was appalling. Driving licenses could be bought. If you were a foreigner you were always wrong. You could, had to, buy your way out of any accident. I read that coach drivers drove at high speed in the hope that if they set a mine off their speed would carry the driver over safely and only blow the rear end off the bus.

The accidents were horrific. The Viet Cong set up road blocks and took away whoever they considered an enemy. I remember reading that a French consul in the highlands had his car break down, got a lift on a passing bus, was taken by the Viet Cong at a road block and reportedly died in captivity. The French usually considered themselves above this war and therefore immune. It is possible that having known war for twenty five years when I arrived in 1965 the Vietnamese had developed a certain fatality to it
I switched the number plates of my car and then we continued through an area of rubber plantations. By the time we reached rolling grass covered hills it had begun to enter my somewhat sluggish mind that there was no traffic on the road. I also knew by now what no traffic meant. I hid my identity papers and threw away my X numbered plates. The few villages that there were seemed lacking in activity. Once we passed a lonely catholic priest on a motor scooter. The road climbed steadily and we talked a little. PB was from Hanoi. They had also had a house in the country and been relatively well off. Her father, a nationalist, had been taken away by the Viet Minh one night and never seen again. The family moved south after Vietnam was divided. There was an uncle, a colonel, who had been a province chief. I think all province chiefs were military, possibly with one exception to try to prove the country was not exactly a military dictatorship or something. He had been on the wrong side in one of the numerous coup d'états. There was another tragedy in her life, but it is not for me to talk about here. Every Vietnamese had his own share of tragedies linked to the war. Her English was excellent and she had this delightful habit of mixing her adverbs and adjectives up.

We decided I needed another identity. I suggested being a French catholic priest. I was often mistaken for one in the province where I worked. PB pointed out that her presence didn't lend credence to that. I suggested being a press reporter. We rejected that, but later I was to join an obscure press agency, get the necessary papers, and use that cover in my off duty time. I would also work as a freelance. We settled on my being a teacher.

I was to become one at some future date. Once when we were driving in the delta, I think near My Tho, and had stopped to buy some pineapple from a young boy by the road he had remarked that I was English. He had a brother studying in England. I worked with, was paid by and had a lot of friends who were Americans, but alone in the countryside they were the last people I wanted to be associated with. The road started to climb again and still no traffic.

We now looked out on the most beautiful green I had ever seen. Below us there was wave after wave of all the shades imaginable, forest or jungle, I can't remember, but it was utterly lovely. Whatever shade of fear we were suffering from also disappeared.

I think we had just put it away and pretended to ourselves it wasn't there. In any case we were committed now and it was too late to turn back. At one point I saw the backs of soldiers looking into the forest, and the sound of bursts of machine gun fire, and then nothing. Next we reached a high plateau with gently rolling hills covered with tea or coffee plantations.

I should know which, but this is written after a forty year interval and although some of my memories are crystal clear as though they happened yesterday others are blends of colours and some only grey.

To digress. The old plantations had been owned by the French. I was to get to know a Vietnamese woman whose family owned one. I remember being given large bags of coffee grains freshly roasted, black and small, glistening with butter. The coffee in Vietnam was the Robusta variety. Very strong.

It was usually drunk out of small glasses with lots of sugar but no milk. I used to drink far too much and my nerves suffered accordingly. The tea was drunk from large glasses, without sugar or milk, thank god. Outside Saigon at least it was usually free and accompanied whatever one was eating.

On the rare occasions I stopped somewhere just to have a glass it was always given, so I usually bought a small cake or something. Anyway the water was usually of dubious quality and tea was safer.

We arrived at the civil airfield serving Dalat. Very small. No sign of any activity or any planes. I was to get used to, indeed to take part, in this Vietnamese habit, of going to an airfield for a flight and sit down and wait hopefully, looking up into the sky for hours for the sight of a plane.

When no plane appeared that day they would go away and come back the next. The patience of the East. From here the road climbed steeply and the scenery changed again. One could have been in the Alps.

The forest was now evergreen and there was a magnificent mountain off to our left. Unknown to us this was quite the most dangerous part of the journey and that mountain was full of tunnels infested with the Vietcong.

We finally arrived in Dalat. We had not seen a single motorised vehicle the whole journey, save for that lone catholic priest. I will deal with this town later when I was to get to know it much better. For us it was just a question of finding a hotel , a quick walk around, food and bed. The town maintained a rather French air. With my beard I easily fitted in.

It was the one place in Vietnam where I was never exploited. There was no United States presence at all. In all my visits there I never saw more than one or two Americans. I do not want to criticise Americans in these articles. The problem was, the fighting aside, there was often an unfortunate relationship between the two peoples, both seeing the other's faults and never the qualities.

There was a curfew at eight o'clock. It was a town that had seen its heyday years before. Now it had the South Vietnamese military and police academies. It had the Couvent des Oiseaux. It was known for its vegetables which were sent by road to Saigon. Its girls had a lovely healthy glow to their cheeks. All of this for later. We spent a rather restless night.

There were continual bursts of small arms fire throughout the night. Will I ever tell of any happy one's. There were many, but evidently not at the end of our excursions. We had to return the next day. I only ever had two days off unless arranged otherwise and as all my trips were unauthorised I preferred not to talk about them.

The following morning I filled the car up with petrol, lit my pipe and we began the return trip. It was a lovely day, the air fresh and pleasant but not another car on the road. We descended what I would call the alpine part of the journey, past that imposing mountain now on our right, to the small airfield. We then continued across the area of what must have been a high plateau of plantations.

I took some photos of PB, I still have them, at one point we stopped so she could buy some meat, buffalo(?) off a montagnard woman we came across, but we only had notes and the montagnard would only accept coins. Descending through the lovely green forests PB slept beside me. I was brutally awoken myself when the car hit a pothole, struggled to regain control of it and then continued wide awake. I dread to think what would have been the result of even a minor accident.

The drive was eventless and we passed again through rolling hills of tall grassland. As we approached the rubber plantations we stopped for a coca cola at some village. I have always found it the most refreshing of drinks on such occasions and gives one the force to continue. Then, surprise, a column of South Vietnamese armour approached from the south. The first vehicles we had seen in two days.

I don't know what the US advisors made of me quietly sitting at a table with PB. Actually they gave a most friendly smile. Perhaps not for me. Driving on we were stopped two or three times in the rubber plantations by Regional Force soldiers who wanted to be recompensed for guarding the road for us! I always kept a carton or two of cigarettes for that and usually two or three packets would suffice.

Reaching the Baria Saigon road PB wanted to go to Saigon, so I had to drive there and then back to Van Kiep. I think I must have driven a good eighteen hours during those two days. I could hardly move a muscle when I got back.

Three days after our trip the Viet Cong attacked the road in six places and held control of it for five days. Some time later two Decca employees driving in a jeep from Phan Rang on the coast up to Dalat went missing. In 1971, the British Vice-Consul, a certain Adrian, one of those very rare but most likeable of people was around at my house in Saigon and he told me that he had been interviewing a Viet Cong defector who said they had been stopped at a road block, taken prisoner and died in captivity.

One was British and one American. On the other hand in the same period fourteen unarmed US civilian personnel in a US truck under I think Korean army escort were all killed on the same road when their convoy was ambushed. One had to use one's judgement whether to be armed or not, and if possible what means to travel by. One should also pray not to have been born under an unlucky star.

The Ancient Quarter of Hanoi, Vietnam

Hanoi and Hoi An are perhaps the only two urban centers of Vietnam where an ancient quarter is still preserved. Due to the impact of climatic conditions, the construction materials and wars, the present physiognomy of the ancient quarter only dated back to the end of the 19th century. But according to various historical sources, this area was the core of Thang Long, the capital, since its establishment in the 11th century. This means that this area has existed for nearly one thousand years.

The ancient quarter has the form of an isosceles triangle the top of which is Hang Than Street, the Eastern side is the Red river dyke, and the Western side is hang Cot, Hang Dieu and Hang Da Street, while the base is formed by hang bong, Hang Gai, Cau Go Streets. Prior to the arrival of the French, the ancient quarter had this common feature: criss-crossing streets like on a chess board, most of the streets bearing the name of the products made or traded there.

Sugar Street, Silver Street, Bamboo Basket Street etc. "Tube-house" line both sides of the streets: They are long, narrow shop houses which sometimes and on another street; the front room is a shop for selling or producing goods, behind it is an open -air inner courtyard which provides light and ventilation and which is also used for raising decorative fish or ornamental plants and supplementary area.

Most are none-storey house, with up-turned roofs covered with small red tiles, the two walls surpassing in height the roof to be built in the shape of steps and the edge of roof being two strange pillars. Some houses have second storey but it is usually low, and seldom does be very small, because the population was forbidden, under the feudal regime, to look at the face of the Emperor, particularly from above, when he was passing.

Vietnam Travel - Den Gion Ninh Chu Resort

Spread over more than nine hectares, the resort is perfectly suited to its environment. Statues of Cham dancing girls, carved stone panels, and clay water jars reminded us that we were in the territory of the former Cham kingdom, which flourished in central Vietnam from the second to 15th centuries. Like the Cham towers scattered throughout this region, the resort was decorated in soft shades of red and brown.

Most of the statues in the resort were made by Dang Nang Tho, a master potter from Bau Truc village. Inspired by ancient Cham designs, Mr. Tho uses local materials to create unique sculptures. Like the statues, the rooms combined traditional motifs with modern touches. While we checked into a small villa, some adventurous guests chose to sleep in tents. Following a swim and walk on the while sand, we joined a party grilling fresh seafood over a campfire on the beach.

The sunset transformed the waves into a tapestry of colors: pale blue, green, indigo. Starting out to sea I saw a flock of

Mai fish leaping above waves, as if to welcome me to Ninh Chu Beach.

Come dark, the atmosphere was romantic. The lights from the Sakaya Restaurant were reflected on the sea, while the clay lanterns that lined the resort's paths gave the scene a cozy glow. We sat near the sea and ate fresh prawns and sashimi, washed down with wine. The lights of the squid fishing boats sparkled offshore, forming a glittering string on the horizon.

Listed as a three-star resort, when finished, Den Gion will feature 100 rooms, 36 bungalows and a campground big enough to hold 40 tents. While many visitors will be content to spend their time swimming and sunbathing, various interesting day trips are available.

Here's the mystery: what's it like on the neighboring Hawaiian island of Ni'ihau? This 550-square-mile island is the westernmost of the main Hawaiian islands and has been privately owned since 1864 by the Robinson family, which forbids tourists.

Ni'ihau (Nee-ee-how) is visible from the southwest shore of Kauai, lying low on the horizon 17 miles away. There are 200 or so native Hawaiians who live there and speak the Hawaiian language. In fact, it's the only place the language is spoken any more. It is taught in the island's only school, which goes K-8.

Islanders of course are free to leave and come back, so many of them do. They need to in order to get provisions from Kauai to live on the dry island, which is in the rain shadow of the ancient volcano cone on Kauai, Wai-ale-ale, "the wettest spot on earth" at 460 inches per year of rainfall. The Robinson family, which owns Ni'ihau, has maintained sheep ranches there.

A stunning form of folk art comes from Ni'ihau. These are Ni'ihau shell leis, tiny shells strung from many strands. These tiny luminous shells come in various colors, and so whole families collect them and sort them for size and color. Then the artist, usually a woman, sets to work, punching a hole in each shell using an awl often made from a bicycle spoke (there are no cars on the island). About half the shells shatter at this point. She chooses colors in such a way as to make a final product that is textured with color.

These tiny shells are still found on Ni'ihau, but not on neighboring Kauai where agricultural runoff has tended to kill off the shell-makers. The resulting shell leis are rare, hard to find, and precious. But if you look hard on Kauai, you can find them!

Hawaiian legend has it that the volcano goddess Pele had her original home on Ni'ihau. Then she traveled to Kauai, Oahu, and moved eastward until she found the Big Island of Hawaii, where she is today. Scientists say that the Hawaiian islands were formed as a plate of earth's crust moved slowly across an active lava vent. But Kauai was formed before Ni'ihau, which is sort of a side vent from the volcano that formed Kauai. As the crust moved slowly, Kauai was formed, then Oahu, and so on. Ni'ihau's current form is as an eroded lava dome on the eastern side of the island. Much of the rest is flat and sandy, with a couple of freshwater lakes.

It's possible to find a map of Ni'ihau, and pictures of its rock formations. But how can you go and see? In fact, the Robinson family is allowing a few forms of tourism now. Some helicopter tours from Kauai are allowed to land on remote beaches. And you can take a hunting safari, to control populations of feral bighorn sheep and Polynesian boars. In addition, scuba divers regularly dive off Ni'ihau.

Where does one begin to start when discussing Italy. Well, if you intend to travel there, Rome and Venice are good places to start.

Rome

Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It goes without saying that Rome has a rather prominent past. Lets see, in Rome you will find…[deep breath]…the Vatican, Coliseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Church of Saint Agnese, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and a guy name Allassandro. Just making sure you’re paying attention. Indeed, Rome is filthy with historically significant attractions. It seems you can’t turn around without bumping into something an Emperor built, captured or destroyed. For those willing to risk potential wrath, there are also the new Divinci Code tours, which take you to the locations found in the book.

In all serious, Rome is a city you should visit at least once in your life. No article could ever do it justice, so I’ll just stop here.

Venice

I fondly refer to Venice as the floating city even though it is apparently sinking. If you’ve seen Venice is movies or televisions shows, the depictions are accurate. Piazza San Marco looks exactly the same, birds and all. The Grande Canal is, well, a grand canal with incredible houses lining it and boats putting up down this water way. Built on mudflats in a lagoon, the city doesn’t really have much room to grow. It just seems paralyzed in time.

Once you’ve conquered the tourist attractions, it will be time to get serious about Venice. The best way to do this is stand in front of your hotel or hostel, determine which direction the tourist attractions lie and start walking in the opposite direction. While you may feel like you’re driving the wrong way on a freeway for a few minutes, you’ll eventually start getting into real Venice.

An entirely different side of Venice will appear and you’ll love it. You’ll find little cafes with locals happy to talk to you [and non-tourist prices]. In fact, the Venetians will tend to hold you in high regard since you’re a tourist who is bypassing the tourist areas. This, of course, will logically lead to a whirl of introductions to this nephew, that son of a brother and so on. Next thing you know, you’ll be complaining about Italian politicians and how things used to be better in the past.

While Rome and Venice are excellent travel destinations, you can’t really go wrong in Italy. For the adventurous, set your itinerary with the old map on a wall and dart technique.

The weekends around the Easter are the busiest times in Rome as this city comes alive for the most crucial week in the calendar of Roman Catholics.

The events start in St Peter's Square on Palm Sunday with the blessings of the public Mass and palms. On the morning of Thursday, the Pope preaches the morning Mass in Vatican Basilica. The day after Easter is called "Pasquetta" or the Little Easter and it's where the celebrations actually begin. A number of Catholics head to the outskirts of the city along with their people to enjoy picnics in the surrounding towns and countryside and everywhere else around the country concerts, fairs and dances are held.

Florence

For more than 300 years, Florence has enjoyed Easter with the exploding cart or "Scoppio del Carro". A elaborate, huge cart is dragged through the streets by white oxen, strewn with flowers until they reach the Basilica di Santa Maria in the historic centre of the city. One steel wire links the cart to a High Alter present within the cathedral and, accompanying the Mass, the Archbishop sends a rocket designed in the shape of a dove down a wire into the cart, igniting fireworks hidden within it. This is followed by a lively costumed parade.

Siciliy

Easter in Sicilly (or the "Sa Pasca Manna") is the most crucial festival of the year. One of the most awesome processions in Sicily takes place in the Castelsardo on the Easter Monday. The lights in the town are put off and this procession, called the Lunissanti, winds its way through this town from St Mary's church, lit up only by torches. The other processions of Easter take place in the Castelsardo on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Catenanuova holds the annual Festival for Easter (30th of the March to 8th of the April 2008) with attractions, street entertainment and processions for all the family.

Sardinia

In Cagliari there are ceremonies and processions both in the surrounding streets and local churches all through the Easter week.

The colosseum, also known as the Coliseum, is a large oval stadium located in the center of Rome. It is one of the largest structures ever built during the Roman Empire, and it is considered as one of the great achievement of Roman architecture.

It was constructed at around 70 AD spearheaded by the Roman emperor Vespasian. It was only completed during the reign of Emperor Titus. The Colosseum was generally used for public events such as gladiator matches. These matches are comprised of gladiators who fought against other gladiators, criminals or wild animals. Other events held at the colosseum included mock sea battles, executions and animal hunts. During the medieval era, the use of the colosseum for public events ceased. Instead, it served such uses as dwellings, workshops and fortresses.

All 27 streets accessing the so called " Limited Traffic Zone " have been equipped with electronic access detection devices. Chefchaouen

Asilah
Located south of Tangier on the Atlantic coast, Asilah is a very poplular seaside resort, famous for its nearby Paradise Beach. Paradise Beach is a short taxi or a fun horse and cart ride from the village and is famous for its enormous expanse of unspoilt white, sandy beach.

Not everyone retiring or emigrating to Spain has the funds to lead a millionaire’s lifestyle in Marbella. On the contrary, many people have the intention of leading a more simple life, even along the Costas. Planning your budget for a new life in Spain should take place before you have even left the UK. Be imaginative and plan for the worst case scenario. Of course, everybody’s financial situation will be different but people need to make an allowance for the following and what ever else comes to mind.

Insuring it and paying for it to be put in your name, oh yes you have to pay for that!

The list is endless. During the settling in period of about six months, people new to their life in Spain waste so much money before they eventually get their bearings. You will feel like you are on holiday until you become immune to the beautiful weather and notice that your bank balance has plummeted. Young families and couples who need to earn an income should be very careful as sadly many are forced to return to the UK every year due to a mixture of bad luck and unrealistic expectations.

The following are some suggestions to help to avoid unnecessary excess spending. It might be common knowledge for some people who are more familiar with the coast but I am sure it will benefit as reminder.

Learn Spanish. If you can communicate in Spanish it opens doors for you, cheaper ones! You are less likely to be ripped off and you will be able to sense potentially costly situations.

Bear in mind that for most services you pay a premium to have someone speak to you in your language, it is all part of the paid for service. For example, a wash and blow dry in a Spanish hairdressers where you will be expected to communicate in Spanish might cost you eight euros, in a similar hairdressers where a member of the staff can communicate with you in basic English it will cost fourteen but if you want the privilege of having your hair washed and styled by British hands, you can expect to pay around twenty.

Be careful in the market, market doesn’t necessarily equate cheap. When buying fruit make sure the products on display are labelled with a price. It is not unheard of for people to pay as much as nine euros for a kilo of strawberries. Which reminds me, become familiar with the metric system as it is the only system used in Spain!

Unlike in the UK, where we are following the US with economies of scale and good quality retail bargains, when products are cheap in Spain, it usually means they are poor quality. For example, you can buy a t-shirt from Tesco or Primark and the quality is reasonable and it will probably last at least a season. On the contrary, in Spain, you will be lucky if a cheap top lasts a couple of washes.

Keep an eye on your food shopping bill. There is a particular supermarket which stocks British brands at extortionate prices. Adapt your eating habits and you can save yourself loads. You don’t need to buy Kingsmill bread; there are Spanish equivalents. Check out Mercadona which is great value and excellent quality. Their own brand foods are excellent. I particularly recommend their Tiramisu in the dessert chiller. Okay, their choice isn’t overwhelming, but they stock everything that you need and their stores are a manageable size. You find that you eat more healthily without being tempted by an array of ready meals and you get your shopping done in half the time.

Eating out can be another money drainer if you don’t know the places to go to. Don’t go to the obvious touristy haunts. Drive half an hour to an hour inland and try out a “venta”, where a family of four can enjoy a delicious Spanish home made style cooking for as little as fifty euros.

Of course, it is all trial and error but keep your wits about you. I find that the best bargains are always to be had if you follow the Spanish. Watch where they shop and go out to eat and you shouldn’t go too wrong.

Funicular de Montjüic. As mentioned above, the cable car of Montjüic starts about half way up the mountain, so what better way to get the first half out of the way than taking the funicular train? For those of you unfamiliar with Funicular trains, it’s like a bus on a cable, but is pulled not hanging. This leaves you on the opposite side of the street to the cable car, and is taken from inside Paral•lel metro station, so also fairly central.

The next 2 are not my stint at a bit of free publicity, but I have to include them as they are so cool!! First is GoCar Barcelona. This is an idea embracing the modern day world of GPS systems and whilst not strictly a car – it’s more like a motorbike sidecar, but for 2 people – the little yellow open-top bombers can be seen driving around Barcelona in many locations. The GPS gives you a guided tour in various languages and instructions of where to go as well, so you see the sights “on your own” as you’re driving but with your own Knight-Rider style KITT Car giving you the navigation – cool!! Barcelona shares the privilege of GoCar with only a handful of world cities including Lisbon, Miami, San Diego and San Francisco.

The second brand new arrival and well worth the mention is BarcelonaGlides. This really is a futuristic way to see the city, and involves an almost pogo-stick type invention but for the new millennium! You are considerable higher than the other pedestrians on a platform with two wheels, an axle and two handlebars kind of like a scooter. But the handlebars control the movement of your wheels, kind of like a motorbike. It’s so difficult to explain without actually seeing one, or using one. It’s almost like the wheels are an extension of your legs, and a slight flick of the wrist makes you move. This really is a sight to see, and guided tours give you an amazing insight to the city centre and surroundings – and you don’t even need to take a step!

Many cities across the globe have open top tourist buses, perhaps copying from the infamous red London buses. I usually avoid these buses, as it’s much more fun to work your own way around a city. However, the Barcelona Bus Turistic (the one run by the council, there are a few) is a great way to see the city over ground and get a real idea of the size and expanse on Barcelona. Visitors flying into Barcelona can see for themselves the great heights from Tibidabo down to the sea, and the tourist bus also shows all the major stops along the way in a hop on hop off fashion with discounts available for each and every tourist attraction. This is especially good for families who prefer not to lug pushchairs and strollers or small children in and out of the metro system. The Bus Turistic has enjoyed phenomenal success over recent years and it’s easy to see why.

Walking. OK, so I’m starting with the obvious, but this really is the best way to see Barcelona – especially the Old Town, Gothic quarter streets, the old fisherman’s village of Barceloneta and the beach, the fantastic Palau de la Musica Catalana in the Borne district, leading you all the way over to the garden of Barcelona – La Cuitadella – this is a huge chunk of Barcelona and is a really great way to spend a day, and your feet won’t even notice it, believe me.

2 wheels. Bikes are big business in Barcelona – locals have the great subsidised “bicing” venture, similar to other cities where you can pick up a bike at one place and drop it off at another, thus saving having to bother with locks or storing the bike yourself. There are also many budget bike rental companies all over Barcelona and this summer has seen the re-modelling of many main streets, incorporating bike lanes, sacrificing parking spaces, as Barcelona’s mayor goes even greener.

4 wheels. It’s been known for years that Barcelona is a skater’s paradise. The slight downhill incline gives ease for skaters to effortlessly glide down towards the port, and the many flat parks and open spaces at places like the MACBA, 3 Chimneys Park and Plaça Universitat, plus the seeming indifference to the local cops makes Barcelona a fave for rollerbladers, skaters and all other urban methods.

Tramvia Blau. I’m including this for nostalgia – it’s the only and oldest working Tram in Barcelona, and it takes you from Plaça John F Kennedy up to the foot of Tibidabo, and is a real gem. It’s not a very long journey, but the wonderful houses on either side of the trajectory up Avenida del tibidabo give a great view, and a feel for Zafon’s famous “Shadow of the wind” novel.

The cable cars of Barcelona - two awesome ways to travel in Barcelona. What better way to arrive to the beach, than taking the Miramar cable car over the water of the old port, waving along the way to the cruisers on the ocean liners below, and taking in some breathtaking views along the way. The Montjüic cable car starts just near the Olympic diving boards and recent renovations give an all new experience as the Perspex boxes give an almost 360º view of everything around you. The destination is Montjüic castle where you can survey the working side of Barcelona port, and on a clear day, see the whole of Barcelona.

Our First Stay At Bandon Oregon

Bandon Oregon has some of the most beautiful coastline I have ever seen. It has easily become one of my favorite coastal towns. Bandon has some really nice beaches and a healthy assortment of little coastal shops.It's a town geared towards the visitor and I'm very glad we finally visited.

The weekend before Valentine's day, my wife and I cashed in on some reservations we had made at the Best Western Inn at Face Rock. During the off season it is possible to find some awesome deals for hotels and motels. This particular deal afforded us fifty percent off of the normal price of our stay.

Our room had cable, microwave, refrigerator, desk, table and chairs, king size bed and free long distance and local calls. We were able to get all of this for $54 a night. The room was easily the size of our apartment kitchen and living room combined.

The Inn is located right acrossed the road from beaches and a spectacular ocean view. It's also nestled right up against a golf course and beside Best Western's own restaurant. The restaurant was closed for a remodel but friends have told us the food is great.

The second day of our stay, Amanda and I actually walked from the Inn to old Bandon. It was about a two mile walk right along the ocean with one of the most awesome views I've had the privilege of enjoying.

Old Bandon has all the great stuff that little coastal towns should have. Up until now I was pretty much hooked on Newport and walking the old bay front. Now that I've been to Bandon though, Ive got another great place to visit. Bandon doesn't have quite as many shops as Newport but if you want gifts, candy or food Bandon has it.

In town you'll find a couple a decent sized grocery stores and some pizza and fast food. There is also a Tiffanys, a dollar store and two or three little thrift stores.

We continued our walk through old Bandon where we stopped and ate breakfast at a neat little cafe. There are two or three by the bay. The food was excellent and really cheap. I was actually surprised when we got the bill. After almost six miles of walking we had come full circle back to the Inn.

Bandon really is a beautiful place and our recent trip there was the nicest trip my wife and I have taken since our honeymoon. The coastal view is characterized my majestic rocks stabbing up out of the waves and shear cliff faces bordering the ocean. Everywhere you look is the perfect picture.

After such a nice trip we will be doing our best to get back to Bandon Oregon.

Old Fort is located just south-east of India Gate and north of Humayun’s Tomb and the Nizamuddin Railway Station.

Mughal Emperor Humayun laid the foundation stone of this impressive fort in 1538 but he couldn’t complete it as Afghan warrior Sher Shah Suri defeated him in 1541. Later, Sher Shah Suri made essential modifications in the fort and named it as Shergarh. When the fort was built, there were canals on three sides and the remaining side was banked by the river Yamuna. Old Fort was flanked with massive walls and there were three main entrances to the fort.

Today, most of the old structures of the fort are in ruins, but the remaining portions are enough to mesemerize you.

Old Fort – History
Old Fort is located in the pre-historical Indraprastha of the Mahabharata, which has been surveyed and proved in findings of 1955. From 3rd B.C to pre-Mughal period, there was a fort in Indraprastha. Mughal Emperor Humayun built a new fort here and Old Indraprastha became Dinpanaha. Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun in 1541 and occupied the power. In 1548 Sher Shah Suri died, eventually Humayun recaptured Delhi in 1555 by defeating Sher Shah’s son Islam Shah. Humayun also destroyed Sher Shah’s capital Shergarh.

Tourist Attractions inside Old Fort
Sher Manzil : When you enter the fort through the Zoo Garden or the Talaki Entrance in north, you will come across the octagonal peaks made of sand stones on Sher Manzil. Actually, Sher Manzil was built by Sher Shah but later, Humayun used it as a personal library. In 1556, after hearing Azaan (call for prayer), Humayun intended to offer Namaaz, while coming out from his library he suddenly fell down from the stair-cases and died. Just beyond the library is the Qila-i-Kuhran mosque or Sher Shah Mosque which is known for its unique Indo- Afghan sculpture.

Field Museum : Behind Sher Manzil on the right side at Humayun Darwaja (gate) is Field Museum which has the collection of anthropological exhibits. The Field Museum houses valuable items belonging to Mughal dynasty, Sultanate dynasty, Rajput dynasty, Gupta dynasty, Sunga dynasty, Maurya dynasty and the era before Christ. In addition to these, the coin collections of Sunga dyansty (200 – 100 B.C) is a remarkable attraction inside the museum.

How to Reach
By Air : Delhi is well-connected by several domestic and international flights with important places of India and the world. Indra Gandhi International Airport and Palam airport are the two main airports of Delhi. These airports are five mnts away from each other and served by regular shuttle services.

By Train : Delhi, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station are three main railheads of Delhi. Several mail, super fast, Rajdhani and Superfast trains connect Delhi to rest of the country.

Qutab Minar – Overview
If you are an architecture lover and planning a trip to Indian capital, Delhi, then do not forget to include imposing Qutab Minar in your itinerary. Take a drive 13 kms south from Luteyn’s Delhi, that is Connaught Place, to reach the Qutab complex. Although the 72.5 m high Qutab Minar or Victory Pillar is visible from long distance, but as you reach close to the Minar, your curiosity will increase many folds. Leave your vehicle, buy the entry ticket and enter inside the Qutab complex through magnificent Alai Darwaza.

As you enter inside the complex, you will see graves of historical persons who were cremated on the left and right of gateway. Of course, Qutab Minar is top priority for you in the Qutab Complex, but apart from this you will be certainly mesmerized by excellent examples of early Afghan architecture.

Qutab Minar - Architecture
Architecturally, Qutab Minar was built in Afghan style and it underwent repairing and remaking several times. When you reach close to tower, you will see Aayaats (Verses) from Holy Qoran inscribed all over the walls. In addition to this, you will also view another inscription in Kupee language that “The tower was erected to cast the shadow of God over both east and west.”

The 72.5 mts Minar is slightly leaned and there are 367 revolving steps of flights reaching to top. At its root, the radius is 14.40 mts which gradually reduces to 2.44 m at the top. Qutab Minar has five distinct storeys, each marked by a projecting balcony. The first three storeys of Qutab Minar are made of red sandstone while the fourth and fifth floor are made of marble and sandstone.

Qutab Minar – History
The construction of Qutab Minar was started by Qutub-ud-udin Aibak in 1199 and it was completed by his son-in-law Iltutmish in 1236. Qutub-ud-din commenced construction of the minar but he could complete only the 1st floor, the 2nd and 3rd floor were made by Iltutmish and the 4th and 5th floor were added by Feroz Shah Tughlaq.

The earthquake of 1803 destroyed the Qutab Minar and in 1829 British Major Robert Smith re-built the tomb. Few years later the tomb was brought down from the Qutab Minar and reset in the adjacent garden. In 1981, some students died of stampede while on their way up the steps of flights, since then ascending to the Minar is forbidden.

Tourist Attractions in Qutab Minar Complex
Quwwat – Ul – Islam Mosque : Situated north-west of Qutab Minar, Quwwat – Ul – Islam mosque is one of the oldest mosques built in India. Quwwat – Ul – Islam mosque was built in between 1193 and 1198 A.D. Qutub-ud-din began the construction of this mosque in 1193 but a number of additions and extensions were made over the centuries. The original mosque was built upon a Hindu temple, an inscription over the eastern gateway states that the mosque was built with materials obtained from demolishing ’27 idolatrous temples.’ Initially, this mosque was small, later in 1210 – 1230 A.D, Shamsuddin Iltutmish extended the whole compact area to double and surrounded it with huge walls. In 1300 A.D, Alauddin Khilji increased the area by adding a court to the east and the huge Alai Darwaza gateway.

Even today, you can see the Hindu and Jain origins in many of the elements used in mosque’s construction. The Prayer Hall is 16 mts high and it has arch-type design, while the sand-stone veil built in Indo-Islamic style has hand-written Aayaat from Holy Qoran.

Iron Pillar : Just adjacent to the Quwwat – Ul – Islam mosque is 7.2 mts high Iron Pillar. The Iron pillar stands in the courtyard of the mosque which has been here even much before the construction of the mosque. Originally the Iron Pillar was erected here in the 4th century A.D by Chandra Varman but a six line Sanskrit inscription indicates that it was brought here from somewhere else. You may see the carrier of Vishnu, Garur on the Iron Pillar and it seems that it was brought from a Vishnu Temple.

It is believed that the Iron Pillar was built on Vishnupad hill by Chandragupta Vikramaditya (375 to 413 A.D) that might be transferred by Tomar King Anangapal, the creator of Delhi. Another interesting thing about this Pillar is that the iron has not rusted even after more than 1,500 years. Hearsay, if you can catch round the Iron Pillar by your own arms on back projection, your wish will be fulfilled, so you should take a chance.

Alai Minar : Head north of the Qutab Minar and the Quwwat – Ul – Islam mosque to see the Alai Minar, the unfulfilled dream of Alauddin Khilji. While Alauddin Khilji made additions to mosque he also planned a much more ambitious project. Khilji planned that he would build a second tower of victory just like the Qutab Minar and it would be twice the height of the former. But Alauddin Khilji died during the construction of Alai Minar and the tower could reach only 27 mts high. After Khilji, no one was willing to continue his over-ambitious project and kept the construction confined right at the stage of single floor.

Alai Darwaza : Alauddin’s Alai Darwaza, the main entrance to the whole complex is a popular attraction which will fascinate you with its awesome architecture. Built in 1310 A.D, this red sandstone gateway is fully enriched with zafri network and stands just south-east of the Qutab Minar. Alauddin Khilji hired architectures from Bisenstine and Turkey to build this gateway and first introduced bow-type arch in Indian history.

Other Structures : The Imam Zamin tomb is another attraction which stands beside the Alai Darwaza. Imam Zamin came to India from Turkey in 16th century. The tomb of Iltutmish, who died in 1235 lies by the north-west corner of the Quwwat – Ul – Islam mosque. To the South-West of mosque, Allauddin Khilji (1316) was cremated in L-shape graveyard of Seljuk design.

Red Fort – Overview
As you reach old walled city of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi), the imposing Red Fort on the east will fascinate you with its grandeur. Red Fort or Lal Quila is a historic fort where the national flag of independent India was hoisted on 15th August 1947. Originally, this fort was built by fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, but later British captured the fort and finally 300 years later, this historical fort came under the control of a democratic Government after India’s independence.

Built in red sandstone, the Red Fort extends over two kms and varies in height from 18 mts on the Yamuna river side to 33 mts on the city side. Initially, there were 14 gates to the fort, but now there are two main entrances namely - Delhi Gate to the south and Lahore Gate to the west. Today, the Red Fort is typically an Indian tourist attraction, here you will find guides leaping forth to offer their services as soon as you reach close to the fort. But above all, if you leave the frantic streets of Old Delhi for Red Fort, you will surely get a feel of calm.

Red Fort – History
Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commenced the construction of Red Fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. Shah Jahan erected this fort with an aim to shift his capital from Agra to his new city of Shahjahanabad in Delhi, but his dream was never fulfilled as his son Aurangzeb deposed him and imprisoned him in Agra Fort. Aurangzeb was the first and last great Mughal emperor to rule from the Red Fort. In fact, the Red Fort provides a glimpse of the very peak of Mughal power, when the emperors rode out on elephant back into the streets of Old Delhi.

Tourist Attractions in Red Fort
Lahore Gate : Lahore Gate, the main gate to Red Fort borrows its name from the fact that it faces towards Lahore, now in Pakistan. You will enter inside the fort through 3 – tire Lahore gate and immediately you will find yourself in Chhata Chowk of the ancient Baghdadi type Meena Bazaar. It was a shopping centre for ladies of the court and shops and establishments of the period still exist here. The women sellers are no more the only one here, you will find men and women of various community selling antiques.

On the entrance you will see semi-circular arch and marble stone tomb. In the past, on the outset of the entrance there were galleries on both sides having the sitting arrangements for the guests. As you move further from the arcade of shops, you will reach the Naubat Khana, which was used to be a gallery for court musicians. Today, the Naubat Khana is just an open courtyard.

Diwan – I – Aam : Diwan – I – Aam or the ‘Hall of Public Audiences’ was the hall where the emperor would sit to hear complaints or disputes from his countrymen, except Fridays. On every Wednesday, a court of the masses was held here. Initially due to lime plaster walls, Diwan – I – Aam looked crystal white, while the sand stone walls of the hall was supported by strong columns.

Diwan – I – Aam was elegantly decorated in Persian and Bengali architectural styles. Behind the Hall, there was seat of the shadow of God or throne of the Emperor. The emperor’s aclove in the wall was marble panelled and set with precious stones – most of which were looted following the Mutiny. Later, Lord Curzon restored this hall in 1898 – 1905. In front of the emperor’s seat was gold railings and in the back was Florentine style of ornamentation of flowers, creppers, leaves etc and also the images of brutes framed in 318 tablets.

Diwan – I – Khas : Behind the Mehtab Bagh is the single storeyed marble building called Diwan – I – Khas or the ‘Hall of Private Audiences’. Diwan – I – Khas was the luxurious chamber where the emperor would hold private meetings. Till 1739, the centrepiece of the Diwan – I – Khas was the magnificent 3 yards long, 2.5 yards wide and 5 yards high Peacock Throne or Mayur Sinhasan. But Nadir Shah became mad to get it and eventually he took it to Samarkhand in 1739. However, the throne was broken and did not remain in its real shape. Diwan- I- Khas was unique in its sculpture and decoration, the columns were studded with gems and lattice art work of the building was extra-ordinary. The walls were crystal white marble and the ceilings were made of sliver.

In 1760, the Marathas removed the silver ceiling from the hall, today you can only see a pale shadow of its former glory. On the bow like arch towards north and south walls, you can see inscription in Persian language, “Agar Firdous bar ru-e-zaman ast, Hamin ast a hamin ast a hamin ast”, which means if there is a paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this. In 1857, British captured Delhi and made the Red Fort the barrack of soldiers that led to the ultimate damage of everything of Diwan – I – Khas, even Mughal Frescoes became faded and dirty.

Rang Mahal : Crossing the Diwan- I- Khas, you will come across the Rang Mahal or the Begum Mahal. Initially this romantically charming palace was decorated with fountain on the basement, but later it was converted to lotus-shaped marble palace. Perfumed water was supplied through the pipe lines and the ceilings were covered with gold and silver which had been faded out over the years. Inside the Rang Mahal is the Mumtaz Mahal which is equally attractive in its design. In 1857, during the mutiny it became the guard room of the British and converted to an Archaeological museum in 1912. The museum is open from 10.00 am to 17.00 pm, except Fridays.

Khas Mahal : To the north of Rang Mahal is Shahjahan’s Khas Mahal built fully in marble. Toshkhana or Gorhal looks wonderful, while on the marble fringe was astronomical line drawing and you might see the moon from the north and sun from the south moving round the earth. To the east of Khas Mahal, the Emperor used to come to deliver his assembly of his tenants from the 3-storeyed octagonal Shahi Burj.

Royal Baths : Just next to the Diwan- i – Khas are the royal baths or the hamams. Royal baths have three large rooms surmounted by domes and have a fountain in the centre. One of the royal baths was set up as a sauna.

Moti Masjid : Moti Masjid or Pearl Mosuqe is located close to the Royal Baths. Built in 1659 by Aurangzeb, the richly decorated small mosque appears unique in white and ash colour stripes. The exterior of the mosque is very attractive while the interior is very simple and looks like a replica of mosque in Mecca. Aurangzeb built this mosque for reciting five times daily prayer for himself and his family members, particularly for female members.

Sound and Light Show : The evening programme Son-et-Lumière, is now a modern attraction of Red Fort. The Sound and Light show recreates events of India’s history particularly those linked with the Red Fort. You may see a 330 years long history starting from Mughal era to the day of independence. The Sound and Light Show is one hour long programme and it is presented alternatively in Hindi and English. For watching the Sound and Light show, you have to buy ticket from ITDC in L Block, Connaught Place.

Water Skiing

Parasailing
Parasalining in Goa, is an exciting water sport option. As you soar in the air and let the cool air to gently touch your face, the excitement really kicks in. In Goa you can parasail in two ways - winch-boat parasailing and beach parasailing. Winch-boat parasailing is usually done alone and it takes you high in the air. In winch-parasailing you have to take off and land on the winch boat. On the other hand in beach parasailing you have to launch and land from the beach itself. While landing the beach parasaling requires good coordination and expertise on the part of operator and the ground staff.

Parasailing Sites : Parasailing around Sinquerim-Candolim-Calangute, is an incredible experience as you get the spectacular view of the Fort Aguada. Other popular parasailing sites are Arossim-Cansaulim and Utorda Stretch, Mobor Beach and Miramar.

The jet-ski machine is very simple and easy to handle, but operators in Goa send an instructor alongwith. If you have learnt the basic skills and the operator is satisfied, you could go for a solo run.

Jet-Skiing Sites : You can take up the sport in the beaches of Colva, Calangute, Candolim, Miramar, Arossim, Benaulim, Utorda, Rajbaga and Mobor.

Rates : A ride can vary between 2, 10 and 15 minutes. Usually a 2 minute trip costs Rs. 400, 10 minutes Rs. 1,000 and 15 minutes Rs. 1,500.

Safety Tip : The part of beach which you use for Jet-skiing must be within the operator's sight in a pre-defined area.

Speedboat Rides
A more powerful and faster sport than jet-skiing, speedboat rides provide much more thrill to you. Speedboat ride is a group activity in which 3 to 6 people can participate. The duration of rides usually vary from 10 minutes to an hour, in which you can explore the beautiful Goan coastline. If you go for longer trips, your trip may also include leisure fishing, dolphin spotting trip or visits to cliffs.

Knee and Wake Boarding

Wake-boarding is slightly different from knee-boarding. Instead of two narrow boards, the wake-skier has one broad board to maintain balance.

Knee-Boarding Sites : Knee-boarding in Goa is limited to the beaches of Candolim, Mobor and Rajbaga.

Windsurfing
Windsurfing is the most popular water sports in Goa. Though windsurfing is non-mechanised but it is very tough to learn this sport. Windsurfing is relatively inexpensive and it requires commitment, good health and an instructor.
