Vacation Spots in Africa

Without a doubt one of my favourite vacation spots in Africa is not on the mainland at all, but on the island of Zanzibar.

It is a tiny hotel on the north east coast of Zanzibar called the Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, and given the chance I would go back there again

Most people who take a vacation in Africa, want to go on safari, and I am no exception, but having said that a safari is not a vacation, indeed it isn't really relaxation, but quite hard work, and at the end of a week you need to find somewhere to relax.
At this point you need to decide what you want to do, and of course most people will opt for a beach vacation, possibly in Kenya, Mozambique, or Tanzania, and there are several idyllic spots.

After much thought I chose Zanzibar, and not wanting crowds of people, plus the fact I wanted a white sand beach, I chose Ras Nungwi, and was very grateful I did.

The only downside was it meant a small, dozen seater, single engine aircraft where we were compressed like sardines, for the twenty minute flight over the channel from Dar Es Salaam, to Stonetown. It was only later I realised I hadn't seen a lifejacket!!

The journey up to Ras Nungwi is a good hour plus, mostly over unmade up tracks, until we suddenly reached the north east tip of the island, saw turquoise sea, and a gate was opened to reveal our hotel.

First impressions were good, the staff very welcoming, and the family accommodation we had booked, meant quite the biggest seating outside with several highly coloured Zanzibar day beds and tables.
The rooms were spacious, and comfortable, and we instantly felt totally relaxed.

The beach was powder white, and whilst swimming wasn't an option at low tide, you were able to walk for ever it seemed out towards the reef, and there were plently of warm pools to dip into, it was just beautiful to look back at the thatched roofs of the hotel.
Swimming came into its own as the tide began to come in, and although at high tide swimming wasn't really possible as the tide covered the beach, and there were quite big waves, there was a lovely little hotel pool for our children, whilst parents lay back and unwound on sunbeds.

The food we thought was exceptional, even fresh lobster on the barbecue evenings, and some exceptional 'a la carte ' at lunch and dinner, served by friendly ever smiling staff, who took the time to chat.

The boat boy was terrific with my nervous wife on a snorkeling trip, although beware of the wallowing in the dhows if you tend to feel seasick, and then to top it all the boat boy rescued my wife's prescription glasses from the bilges after we returned fearing them lost forever.

This is a truly lovely place to spend a week, I find it difficult to understand those people who complain. It is one of my favourite Vacation Spots in Africa.

Dream Fishing Vacation Packages at Vamizi Lodge Maluane Island Quirimba Mozambique

Almost by accident I found one of my dream fishing vacation packages at Vamizi Island Lodge, on Maluane Island in the Quirimba Archipeligo Mozambique. I also found out this is an Eco Lodge adventure vacation, but it is my idea of a romantic affordable honeymoon idea, as many of the other guests were honeymooners.

One or two of them just love the idea of remote island vacations, and in fact this is almost one of the ideal honeymoon destinations for warm weather during the winter.

So how did I come to get there in the first place?

I never take the Guardian newspaper, but because my normal paper was unavailable one Saturday last year I bought the Guardian, and I read about this Eco Lodge adventure vacation, went online, looked at some photos, read the descriptions, and just thought that Vamizi Island resort would be perfect as a remote island vacations.

This was how I came to discover Vamizi, and then some months later, landing in Dar es Salaam, going round the corner to the ‘local’ airport, and finding ourselves in a totally different world, the world of Africa. We flew to Pemba, and then on in a smaller plane to Vamizi. My wife who is terrified of flying, found small local African airlines almost too much, but the views did a little to compensate for over two hours flight time.

All was quickly forgotten the moment we entered the lodge, and we knew that this was somewhere very special.

Everybody turned out to greet us, all immaculately dressed in white jackets.

Our very private lodge, one of I believe 10, but the maximum number of guests is 24. Everything has be designed not to damage the environment, plus the fact that all the materials used are sourced locally which is good for the economy.

If you think that means in any way shape or form that the lodges are cheap, then I can tell you, they are luxurious with a large living room, spectacular bathroom, and cool verandah. The walls in the sower are a huge slab of marble, the beds are 4 poster king size, with muslin mosquito nets.

The living room and the verandah have huge chairs and sofas with masses of brightly coloured cushions.

We had a totally private and direct access to the beach of talcum powder white sand.

Anyway I went deep sea fishing, and caught a big fish, don’t ask me what it was, but it was so exciting, I’m hooked!!

This is why it became my dream fishing package, because whenever I go on vacation again, there just has to be deep sea fishing.

Mnemba Island Lodge

It’s a very interesting journey to get to Mnemba Island Lodge. It began with a bumpy and quite scary flight in a single engined aircraft from Dar es Salaam to Stonetown in Zanzibar.

This was followed by an unbelievably bumpy ride, much of it on unmade up roads and tracks, followed by a ferry trip, which African style meant wading off the beach to get on the boat, although in fairness my wife was carried, as was the luggage!!.

If you don’t want to arrive a physical and mental wreck perhaps a 10 day safari in Tanzania first would be a good idea.

Many of the guests at Mnemba were either honeymooners, or couples, but most were on R & R after a safari.

Whatever - the sheer luxury, romance, and general spoiling at Mnemba Island Lodge, albeit in an understated way makes the journey so well worthwhile.

As you may or may not be aware, Mnemba Island Lodge is an intimate private island off the north east tip of Zanzibar, surrounded by its own coral reef within a marine conservation area, so if you scuba dive, then Mnemba Atoll is rated one of the best reefs in East Africa.

If like my wife and I, you only snorkel, then there is fabulous snorkelling, almost off the beach.

The Mnemba Island Lodge offers privacy, and exclusivity, and although the reef is a popular site for hired dhows from all over the north east of Zanzibar, it is rather fun to watch them wallowing in the open sea, having travelled perhaps for over an hour to get there, knowing it is all on your doorstep!!

Now there is something you need to be clear about, Mnemba lacks a number of things – namely air conditioning, windows, no choice of menu at mealtimes, no television or radios, and the water you wash in, is a bit salty.

Having said that your accommodation appears to be in thatched huts, when in fact it is in 10 well secluded split level beach bandas, built on platforms raised off the sand, which have been cleverly situated to make sure they are completely private.

The bandas are all made of natural local materials, and from the outside look pretty basic, and it is not until you enter that you realize how nice they are. The bathroom is spacious with shower, his’n’her washbasins, and separate w.c.

However you will sleep in the biggest beds imaginable, swathed in billowing muslin nets, cooled to perfection by a constant sea breeze coming off of the Indian Ocean.

As well as the banda, you also get your own little pagoda with sun beds on the beach itself (with blinds
that can be lowered should you want protection from the sun) and the most wonderful double bed-sized swing with mattress on the beach.

We loved the food which is prepared almost exclusively from local ingredients but in the modern bistro style.

By the way, there is no room service as you know it, because there are no telephones, however that is sorted by speaking to your own personal butler!!

I should also add there are literally no menus, but the food is delicious, and if you want something, then all you have to do is ask.!!

Mnemba is the ideal place to leave all the worries of the 21st century behind, as well as your shoes.

There are very few decisions left to make, apart from what you want to drink now, what you want to eat later, and where you want your butler to set it up, and then what you want to do tomorrow.

It’s expensive, it’s simple it’s unsophisticated, and it’s worth it.

Chapwani Island Zanzibar

If you want to enjoy a small piece of paradise, the idyllic Chapwani Private Island is so delightful you won’t believe it is true. It is a tiny coral island nearly a kilometre long and some 100 metres wide. It's sixteen acres, and it is surrounded by small coves, sandy bays and crystal blue waters, with a beautiful white sand beach running down one side. At low tide you can walk around the entire island exploring the exposed coral and small coves and inlets.

It is only fifteen minutes by boat, which is just over a mile from Zanzibar’s capital Stone Town, but you are miles and miles away from its’ hustle, bustle and smells.

Privacy and a high level of service are the real feature of Chapwani, which has a maximum of twenty guests at any one time. What this effectively means is ‘no crowds’!! As it is a private island you won’t be disturbed by beach hawkers, or people walking by and staring at you, which is wonderful.

Everybody staying on Chapwani must ensure transfers are organised. This will either be from the airport or the sea port. For all guests staying on Chapwani it is necessary to arrange a transfer from the airport or port, into Stone Town and across to the island by boat. As an alternative, you can get one of the regular boat transfers everyday at 09.00hrs and 16.30hrs. The boat arrives at and leaves from Mercury's Restaurant in front of the Old Dispensary in Stonetown.

You will need to wade calf deep into the ocean off the beach to board and again when you land on the island, so waterproof shoes are useful.

Your arrival is at the southern end of the island, where a jetty sticks out into the sea.

ACCOMMODATION

You will be accommodated in one of ten bedrooms in five thatched bandas, nestling into coconut palms, mangrove trees and baobabs. Inside you’ll find a spacious room with large double bed – the traditional Zanzibari four-poster with a mosquito net draped over it – whose plump pillows are adorned with a freshly-plucked hibiscus flower. They are decorated with colourful African prints and furnished with local antiques, and a ceiling fan!! There’s just enough space for a cot or an extra bed.

At the back is a bathroom with basin, shelves; and a separate toilet. Please note the bathrooms are attractive with a sunken bath, but no plug, and an open plan hand shower. There is now solar heating so hot water is available, but don’t forget that as there is no fresh water on the island, and it is all shipped from the mainland, so don’t use too much water.

The generator that supplies the Lodge is switched off in the evenings, so the ceiling fans don’t work as well, and you may want to keep cool by opening the banana leaf shutter to let the sea breeze in.

No television, no telephone, no airconditioning, so no 21st century disturbances, just adds to the wonderful feeling of escapism and romance. In the evening when the main generator is switched off, the ceiling fans operate only on their lowest settings. However this should not be too much of an issue as there is usually a good sea breeze.

Outside is a wooden terrace with deckchairs, and just beyond that a thatch parasol with your own sunloungers. The sea is so close that at very high tides it practically laps at your terrace. The terrace is a lovely place to sit and watch the sunset

You can take your sun loungers onto the beach and find a secluded spot to sunbathe.

FACILITIES

On this magical little private island the open-plan thatched lodge is in the centre of the island with views to both sides. This might give you some idea of how narrow the island is!!

It is reached by sandy paths, which are lit by paraffin lights at night, and it blends in perfectly with the landscape, and consists of a bar, dining room and lounge decorated in Swahili antiques.

The lounge area, might better be called a lounging area because of its handmade furniture and comfortable sofas is a nice place to hide from the heat of the day. The whole place is airy and pleasant and has the kind of laid back beach atmosphere, that has long gone from the Maldives and the Pacific Islands

.

All your meals are taken in the restaurant which is right by the waters edge, where Swahili chefs prepare delicious three-course set meals which have a definite Italian bias, due in no small part to the Italian owners!!

If you have a special celebration then it is possible to arrange a table on the beach for a romantic dinner, or lunch to your room..

The food is superb and often includes freshly caught fish, crayfish, prawns and other tasty treats, although having said that it is possible to eat the odd steak!! If you are worried about eating in a place like this, then don’t!! The food here is safe, tasty, well cooked. It is worth adding that the menu changes daily, and as you might expect in a small intimate lodge like Chapwani there is a reasonable amount of choice, and discussion.

If you are a breakfast lover, then you will have a choice of fresh fruit, juices, hot drinks, bread, jam and eggs to order.

Many visitors take the dinner/ breakfast half board option, so they can visit Stone Town and have lunch out, but if you just want to relax and stay put, then you can have light lunches cooked for you.

The bar is a relaxed place to gather in the evenings.
The bar is well stocked with soft drinks, beer, South African wine and liquor. It is a great meeting place, and there is nothing quite like cocktails at sunset on a tropical island, especially when you can see the sunset.

There is a diesel generator for electricity, this goes off at about midnight and starts again in the morning. For the remainder of the time a small generator keeps the lights working in the rooms

Chapwani’s sixteen acres are covered with massive ancient baobab trees, coconut palms, passion fruit and giant cacti
The jetty sticks out into the sea at the southern end of the island, where there are a number of small sandy coves, and where there is a large sandbank which emerges at low tide, meaning you can swim no matter the state of the tide.

The north shore of the island is principally reef with fossilized coral cliffs rising 3 to 4 metres out of the ocean and fringed with vegetation. This side of the island bears the wave action and has been carved into interesting shapes In one place there is a small gap in the coral which lets the sea in and out at high tide, leaving a tranquil inland lagoon in which to swim. The southern shore has a wide sandy beach. The centre of the island is generally covered with dense vegetation, through which winds a network of paths.

The island is good for bird watching, with many birds using the island as a roost. In the early evening the egrets flock from their feeding grounds on Zanzibar island, back to Chapwani for the night. During the day you can sit in the bar and watch out for Sundevall's blue duikers, a rare endemic species of which there are about sixty on the island.

The thick vegetation here may be why it is home to a stray colobus monkey whose presence on the island no one can explain. Shy and reclusive, he is only occasionally seen swinging from one tree to another.

The large herd of some 60 dik-diks, miniature antelope, native to Zanzibar hide here during the heat of the day in the thick undergrowth, to emerge in the evening in the open.
One of the trees at the southern end of the island is also home to a large flock of fruit bats (over 1,000), these sleep in the safety of the island during the day and leave in large swarms at dusk towards the mainland, returning only shortly before dawn to their resting place.

Along the South West Coast of the island runs the sea wall protecting the small but fascinating British seamen's graveyard. This is a historic monument of great interest and beauty and the graves through their inscriptions tell the stories of tall ships, battles with arab dows during the slave wars and the sinking of HMS Pegasus, the first shot to be fired in the First World War. You'll notice that there is also a small cemetery on the island, which explains the island's English name, Grave Island. The British used it in the late 1800s and early 1900s to bury Royal Navy sailors who lost their lives at sea. It also contains gravestones for the crewmen of the HMS Pegasus, which was bombed in Zanzibar harbour in 1914 by the German cruiser SMS Konigsberg. The cemetery hasn't been well-maintained, but it has a certain atmosphere and is interesting historically. It's worthwhile taking a walk around to read the inscriptions on the stones.

From here the long sandy beach stretches for over 500 yards all the way to the Northern tip of the island. The sand is fine and white and perfect for swimming for some eight hours out of twelve. At low tide, the coral reef surrounding the island is uncovered, revealing crevices and pools in the coral full of multi-coloured small shore life. Shoals of flying fish can often be seen off the island and dolphins regularly pass close by the shore.

In the early morning a flock of white egrets and other sea birds gather at the Northern tip of the island. An early morning dip in this spot is an unforgettable experience, the birds dive in the water all around you, totally oblivious to your presence.

The two little coves at the North of the island provide perfect privacy and must be one of the most idyllic spots in the whole of Zanzibar to spend a day on the beach in total isolation.

Moving round the island to the North Eastern coast of Chapwani, we come to a natural pool, emptied at each low tide through a small gap in the coral but refilled with fresh sea water with each tide. This is another idyllic spot to swim and sunbathe.

The remainder of the North East coast is lined with rugged coral broken by only a couple of small isolated coves suitable for swimming only at high tide.

At night the island is superb. The lights of Stonetown sparkle in the distance and the stars above are breathtaking.

The island is surrounded by small coves, sandy bays and crystal blue waters and is perfect for snorkelling, windsurfing and diving at the many interesting locations near the island.

Another great plus is that you can swim out from the beach as far as you like at any time of the day.
Chapwani is one of very few locations in Zanzibar when you can swim all day, regardless of the tide. When the water is low you can also walk out onto the reef, where you can join local fishermen in looking for starfish, sea cucumbers and that kind of thing.

ACTIVITIES

This is not a resort, so there's not much in the way of watersports activities. However the following list, whilst not full, should keep you busy!!,

  • Swim and sunbathe on the beach - in low tide you’ll have to walk to the end of the jetty to swim
  • Explore the wooded interior – being only 10 minutes from end to end, you’re unlikely to get lost
  • Borrow a canoe and paddle around the island
  • Spot dik-dik (miniature antelopes) and, hanging from the trees while they sleep, a colony of fruit bats
  • Look out for birds, including a pair of fish eagles and frequently-passing waders
  • Visit the graveyard of the English sailors who were killed on HMS Pegasus at the start of WW1
  • Take the hotel’s boat into Stone Town (there’s a free outward shuttle in the morning and return in the afternoon) to go sightseeing, shopping, or visiting the spice garden
  • Go diving with One Ocean dive centre in Stone Town - $80 for a day trip with double dive and lunch
  • Play beach volleyball (if you can find enough players)
  • Take a boat trip to the adjacent islands of Bat and Changuu (Prison], where you can see the giant endangered Aldabra Tortoises, or go snorkelling, or perhaps just walk around, or eat at the restaurant.
  • There is no official beauty salon, but massages are sometimes available on request in your room.
  • Tour of Stone Town for half a day is $70 with driver and a guide
  • Half Day Tour of The Spice Plantations is $70 with a driver and a guide

Swimming with dolphins is $90 for a half day with car and driver

In truth it's a bit basic, and would be more of a fantasy escape island could you not always see the boats anchored in the harbour.

The Best Time Of year To Visit South Africa

I don’t know whether or not you have considered not only a vacation in South Africa, or even got as far as the planning stage. For most people a visit to South Africa tends to be in the middle of the European Winter, because of the attractions of blue sky and a much better temperature.

Naturally enough this is high season time in South Africa, and we should all know exactly what that means.

It of course means high prices, and crowds, two things that would put me right off.

Going to South Africa has to include at least a few days spent on Safari, so what does that mean in high season?

The first thing it means is a 40% hike in hotel room rates, and in the same vein, a substantial rise in air fares especially around the Christmas to New Year period.

In addition why don’t you consider the following thoughts?

If you want to fly from Europe to Cape Town, then fares drop sharply in mid August, and hotel rates stay low until September. It is true that the temperature in Cape Town over Christmas are around 25 degrees centigrade, and in August only 18 degrees. There is far more rain in August, but what are the advantages of a low season visit apart from the obvious financial one?

The first thing is, that you don’t hopefully go to South Africa to sit and vegetate on a beach, after all you can go to many other less interesting places and do that.

There is more rain so in the Western Cape; The Namaqualand is in full bloom, just for a very short period of time.

It is a great time to go whale watching in Hermanus, and a wonderful time to visit Kruger Park, because this is when the animals congregate around water holes.

So in conclusion the best time to visit South Africa is not December/January, but August

Visiting Africa for your Next Vacation

Consider this - Africa takes in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, all different in themselves, but vastly different to Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, which are themselves different to South Africa.

We must add to this list, the offshore islands of Zanzibar, and perhaps The Seychelles, and Mauritius, although it would be easy to argue they belong to The Indian Ocean, and wouldn't qualify as somewhere to go for an Africa Vacation.

What does a vacation mean to you, because the success or failure of your hard earned break depends entirely on your family unit all being happy with the same kind of vacation.

You may think a safari would be amazing, but how do you feel about tents, creepy crawlies?

Do you want to spend time looking at ancient treasures and tombs?

Are you basically a bone idle beach bum, at your happiest with a good book and a cool refreshing glass?
How about the noise, and smell and adventure of the 'souk' with lots of hassle and excitement?
Is sophistication necessary for enjoyment?

Be in no doubt the continent of Africa offers a great variety of vacation opportunities.
From Egypt on the north eastern coast to the game reserves of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, there is something for everybody.

The most popular tourist areas are those bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the northeastern coast, such as Tunisia, and Morocco, then the islands of the Seychelles.
An area of increasing popularity in South Africa is a wine tour.

At the opposite end of the continent several thousand miles away, Egypt is home to countless antiquities.
A visit to Africa should be made with great care, as it is too large to tackle in one trip.
You need to focus on a region and allow enough time to adequately see that area of the continent.

Visit Kruger National Park South Africa and Stay At Royal Malewane

The Kruger National Park South Africa has long been the place to visit on a South Africa Safari Vacation. Then there is only one place to stay, and that is the Royal Malewane when you are on a South Africa Game Safari.

Yet having said that Game Drives are not the only reason to come here.

Royal Malewane will give you a range of actitivities from game drives to bush walks, spa treatments, and wonderful new gymnasium, and game watching from the verandah or the swimming pool. This is a real haven of peace and quiet whilst being completely surrounded by the African Bush. This is why people who value their privacy come here.

Seclusion is the best word to describe the suites at the Royal Malewane. They are simply enormous with canopied King size beds, window sized Victorian baths, and indoor and outdoor showers, with views to die for from the suites. In addition they are air conditioned, and yet have a fireplace. There are six one bedroomed suites, and the two bedroomed Royal and Malewane Suites with their own personal butlers. Each suite is unforgettably old colonial Africa in concept.

To sit on your verandah and watch the splendours of Africa unfold in front of you is bewitching, because the fact that all the suites are raised up on stilts gives you the elevation to improve your view no end. The plunge pool of the suite might even be used by passing elephants to sneak a drink from it is that close up and personal.

Elevated walkways link the suites to the main lodge continues the old colonial theme in its furnishings, and even dining is in keeping with the best china silver and crystal.

The service is exceptional, and the food is exceptional, with a great wine list It is extraordinary the first time you look up from the dinner table in the middle of a sumptuous feast to see a group of elephants walking by..

Royal Malewane is at once luxury, and then unforgettable, and thirdly almost without fault. Places don’t come much better than this, with a maximum of sixteen guests in the Thornybush Game Reserve area right next to the Kruger National Park. This is the home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino amongst others, and to over 250 recorded birs species. This will give you one of the best game viewing experiences in South Africa if not all of Africa.

The Kruger National Park South Africa has many quality lodges but nothing like Royal Malewane which somehow manages to combine colonial splendour with the quality of hospitality and facilities associated with the best traditions of the 21st Century.

Of course you take a South Africa Game Safari to see game, and you will find that the staff do all in their power to ensure you see what you want to see, with great rangers and trackers to ensure this happens, and their enthusiasm and knowledge is huge.

The Royal Malewane has to be seen to be believed. It really is the place to stay for the Kruger National Park, and it will give you a totally memorable South Africa Game Safari Vacation

Adventure Travel in Nepal

With its majestic Himalayan Mountains and fascinating local culture, Nepal is a favorite destination for adventurous travelers. Each year thousands embark upon the experience of a lifetime to spend days or weeks in the breathtakingly beautiful country of Nepal.

Most adventure travelers in Nepal will be treated to magnificent views from high in the mountains. They will wander through pure forests and past clear mountain lakes, rivers and waterfalls. They'll visit remote Buddhist monasteries and shrines and see tiny mountain villages, full of friendly locals.

Trekking expeditions in Nepal are quite popular. They typically involve a small group of people who have been given a list of equipment, such as hiking boots, to bring with them to Nepal. Once they arrive in the country they set off together to explore. There is usually a trekking staff that comes along on the trip and carries most of the camping equipment and even the travelers' bags. They set up the camp, cook meals and break camp, leaving the traveler to enjoy the trek without the physical hardship of toting heavy packs.

Treks are available for people with various abilities. While a person should be in good shape for these treks, one does not need to be a tri-athlete to take part. There are more strenuous treks for those in great physical condition, as well as easier treks. Many of the easier treks are appropriate for families and allow children to participate. Some companies rate the treks they offer by level of difficulty, to help travelers judge which trek would be best for them.

While trekking is one of the most popular forms of adventure travel in Nepal, it is by no means the only one. There are many ways to enjoy the great outdoors in beautiful and mysterious Nepal.

- The Himalayas make Nepal a favorite destination for mountain climbers. There are well over 100 peaks open to mountain climbers in Nepal, including the famed Mount Everest.

- The mountains of Nepal also have trails for mountain bikers of varying skills.

- Nepal offers challenging climbing cliffs for avid rock climbers.

- While rafting and kayaking in Nepal, adventurers can float along picturesque mountain rivers enjoying tranquil views, far from the well-traveled paths.

- Finally, adventure travelers in Nepal can choose to experience a jungle safari from a jeep or the back of an elephant.

Nepal's wildlife reserves and conservation areas boast a variety of unique animals, including the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Greater One Horned Rhinoceros.

A family friendly safari lodge in the Eastern Cape

My two short-attention-span, Ipod focussed sub adult sons could pose a tough ask for any self-respecting Mother Nature focussed property. However, I wish to inculcate my family to experience the inherent wonders of Mother Nature. In this quest, I have come across a place in the Eastern Cape that will exceed these needs and at the same time reach into the minds of each guest in a manner and style that will have all sitting together for dinner in the evening chatting avidly about their respective interface with Mother Nature in a fascinating compilation of stories all ages will relate to.

Riverbend Lodge talks about “revitalising your soul“ and “being a personal experience, dedicated to conservation and the rehabilitation of Africa’s natural world“. Lofty words without doubt, but is this reflected in the experience? Absolutely! And more, much more found in both the real & intrinsic value place before their fortunate guests.

Claire & I hold exceptionally high standard requirements for our clients benefit. This incorporates the entire spectrum offered by our suppliers. Cuisine, accommodation, activities, position, environment, corporate social responsibility and their policy on responsible tourism all impact on our evaluation and responding directive on their inclusion. These traits are fairly simple to evaluate. There is however an aspect that covers the human capital to be experienced by our clients. For us, this is the key to all of the above criteria. If the team have the ability to converse with adults and not with the youngsters, well it will not work. At Riverbend they not only speak to both levels, no, much more than this, they have carved out an entire dictionary (both pictorial and visual) to enrich the youngster at their level of understanding.

Their family program is really excellent. A dedicated TV channel has to be one of the most unique and attractive ways to keep children in one spot for any length of time. The offering covers favourite videos listed by their guests. An absolute hit is to be found in the art of culinary prowess with the chef in his kitchen. Imagine meeting with co guests for high tea before your afternoon game drive and wondering why your little ones smile is just SO wide, what have they been up to you may ponder? You are then presented with an array of “home made biscuits”, very homemade, in fact they are made in the hands of your very own offspring.

Extending the human capital angle to the game rangers at Riverbend Lodge, they come to their fore in the company of children. Carefully designed game walks and interpretations of Mother Nature for their inquisitive minds captivate their attention. You will marvel at how a simple twig, shrub or dung beetle can hold their focus for an eternity. An answer is to be found in the passion, respect and enthusiasm their rangers hold for their charges and the manner in which each child is given the creative scope to be involved at their level of understanding.

Yes, as an avid delver into the realm of Mother Nature and in the belief that all souls thrive in this environment, I would consider Riverbend Lodge and their entire family program one of South Africa’s best ways for families to arrive with a separated mindset and yet leave in the knowledge that Dad is OK really and for Dad to know that his family have learned a little, grown a little and importantly the family have lived a great deal together.

This is because not only are there many types of bird species for you to see in the Caribbean , there are also many very rare types of bird species, that you will never have chance to see anywhere else in the world.

Here are some of the places you may wish to visit on your cruise.

The Trinidad Asa Wright Nature Center. Is situated ten miles north of the town of Arima on Blanchisseuse Road. It is a wonderful location for birdwatching, with over 200 acres of rain forest. You can take a walk here on the many forest trials and you will be able to observe many different bird species. If you can make the time, i would try to spend at least 2 to 3 days here as it is an ideal place to enjoy your passion for birds.

The Bubali Pond in Aruba. Is on the north side of eagle beach and just south of De Olde Molen. You can expect to see brown pelicans here in large groups as well as the Black crowned Night Herons. It is best to do your birdwatching here at dusk or dawn.

In Aruba’s Spanish Lagoon. You will have the chance to observe many different species of birds, such as, brown pelicans, egrets, herons and frigates. Do not be at all surprised if you also see large green and yellow parakeets that are twice the size of those you would see in a pet store at home. These birds are mostly seen at sunset.

The Barbuda Frigate Bird Sanctuary. Is a secluded location, this is because the only way to get there is by boat. The use of a birdwatching guide is recommended here. When you get to this location you will be able to see thousands of Fregata Magnificens or man of war birds. The best time to visit here is during the breeding season as you will get to see over 170 species of birds living together.

If your birdwatching Caribbean cruise makes a stop in Jamaica, you should take the time to visit the Rockland’s Bird Sanctuary. Here is a once in a lifetime opportunity for any bird watcher to observe 289 different bird species of which 28 are endemic and 6 have just been introduced. There are also 10 bird species on the endangered list which includes the Black billed and Yellow billed parrots.

There is an entrance fee charged at this sanctuary and you can also pay extra for a guided tour, which is recommended that you do so. Here, you will get to see hummingbirds, Red billed Streamertails, Jamaican Mango, Black and Yellow faced Grassquits as well as their relative the Orangequits. All these species of birds you will be able to hand feed, if you wish to.

These places are just a few that you can visit while you are on a Caribbean cruise. There are many more locations available to you and all you need to do is search the internet to fine them.

The Caribbean cruise packages that are being offered do not come with birdwatching tours, but once your cruise liner docks at port, you can sign up for one as they are readily available to you at many locations. So who said you can not enjoy two pleasures at the same time?

Safaris Are Great In Botswana

Maun is the primary international link with Botswana via Johannesburg and Harare and secondary links through Gabarone, Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Nairobi, DaresSalaam, Lilongwe, Lusaka and a few other regional airports.

Light aircraft charters are a common feature of safaris in Botswana, Maun and Kasane are the main internal hubs, with most of the camps having their own airstrips.

Botswana has a long and dry winter period from May to December, January to April is the wet season. Safaris in Botswana can be very sensitive to seasonal changes depending upon what youd like to see.

In Okavango Delta the floods arrive at Mohembo in December with a peak between January and March, sometimes as late as May. The flood in Maun usually reaches its peak in July or August, sometimes as late as September. Best game viewing is generally July to October. Some areas of the Delta experience heavy winds during August and September and some of the seasonal camps are closed during the wet season.

Moremi is good all year but best during the dry months from May to October.

Chobe The riverfront at Kasane and Linyanti is good all year best from May to October. The Savuti area is best from November to May if the Savuti channel floods or water remains in the Mababe Depression then May to October is excellent. Midwinter can be very cold and the worst heat is encountered from September until the rains start.

Kalahari during winter, the days are hot with night time temperatures at sub-zero. Summer temperatures are scorching. Best tackled March to October.

Arguably southern Africas most popular safari destination. A hugely unpopulated territory that enjoys political and economic stability and is blessed with impressive wildlife and wilderness areas.

Botswana is well suited for both first time African visitors and safari specialists seeking remote and secluded safari getaways.

Botswanas prized safari destinations include the Okavango Delta and Moremi Chobe National Park and Savuti the remote Linyanti/Chobe river system, the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans.

Safari accommodations in Botswana are comparable with the best elsewhere in the region. This applies as much to lodges and seasonal camps as it does to the few specialist mobile safari operators.

With few exceptions, lodges are located in private concessions outside but in close proximity to the actual Park and Reserve boundaries.

One of the major attractions is the generally small size of accommodations with most of them accommodating on average 16 or less guests at any one time.

Frankfurt Attractions

Frankfurt is renowned for its high rise buildings, the European central bank, the birthplace of poet and writer Johann Goethe, its international airport, and of course its delicious Frankfurters, but there is so much more to this city.

Centrally located in the heart of Germany, Frankfurt has a whole host of attractions, a sprinkling of theatres and galleries, as well as museums, an excellent transport network and an energetic nightlife scene.

For a city of its size, it really has a lot going for it, which is due in no short measure to its international airport, now one of the busiest in Europe. The expansion of the airport has helped the city to prosper both economically and physically.

Known in Germany as Frankfurt am Main, the city is steeped in a colourful history as it was founded in 1st century AD. Since then it has been one of the most important cities during the Roman Empire, later destroyed by French troops during the Napoleon wars and bombed during World War II. However Frankfurt has now established itself as a vibrant and exciting city destination, overflowing with things to do and see, and one of the best things about the city is that it is so compact that everything can be easily reached on foot.

The city is situated on the River Main which divides the city into north and south. You'll find the business district to the north and the charming Sachsenhausen area to the south with its delightful pubs, bars and restaurants.

Because of Frankfurts central location, there is a good chance that youll pass through here, either to change trains or catch a flight from its busy airport.

Skyscrapers housing major financial institutions dominate the scene in the central business district. The West end remains predominantly a residential and business district. The Marktplatz former Market Square, Romer City Hall, the Kaiserdom Emperor Cathedral, Paulskirche Church of St Paul and the Nikolaikirche Nicholas Church are among the attractions of the Altstadt Old Town.

The Bahnhofsviertel around the main railway station and Kaiserstrasse is the cities red light district, although the ubiquitous seediness has recently developed into a popular and lively entertainment scene. Thirteen museums make up the longest mile of museums within Europe, the Museumsufer Museum Embankment on the southern bank of the Main, reached on foot via Eiserner Steg. Most of Frankfurts museums are closed on Monday and open until 2000 hrs on Wednesday.

Visitors increasingly flock further south of the Main to Sachsenhausen, the oldest district in Frankfurt, to enjoy Appleton apple wine at traditional half timbered taverns. The best views of the city can be gained from the restaurant on the 52nd floor of the recently finished Main Tower. Students and artists contribute to the bohemian atmosphere of the Nordend around Eschenheimer Tor.
